A Bequest to the AMA Indigenous Medical Scholarship Foundation
The AMA Indigenous Medical Scholarship Foundation (the Foundation) supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to study medicine and achieve their dream of becoming doctors.
Each year, the AMA offers one Scholarship to an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander student studying medicine at an Australian University.
The value of the Scholarship is $10,000 per annum for the full duration of a medical degree.
A bequest to the Foundation can help increase the number of scholarships offered each year and help grow the Indigenous medical workforce.
There are a number of ways you can leave a bequest to the Foundation. A few examples are listed below:
- You could choose to leave a cash gift to the Foundation in your Will (you may link this to the CPI or provide some other indexation to maintain the value of your gift over time).
- The residue of your estate or percentage of it - this generally refers to what remains of your estate once you have provided for your family and friends, other bequests and any creditors. You could leave the whole residue or a percentage of what remains.
- You may choose to give a specific percentage of your whole estate.
- You may choose to give a specific item of property such as land or shares.
The AMA always recommends that you seek independent financial and legal advice about the implications of making a gift or bequest.
For your convenience and as a guide only, we recommend the following wording for consideration by your legal adviser if you decide to make a bequest to the Foundation:
"I GIVE, FREE OF ALL DUTIES AND TAXES, and for its general purposes:
(a) ______% of my estate, or
(b) the residue of my estate (or ___% of the residue of my estate), or the sum of $ _______, or
(c) my units/shares in_______________ Trust/Ltd, or
(d) my real property situated at [insert street address] having the title reference _________________,
to The AMA Indigenous Medical Scholarship Foundation, (ABN 95 410 894 783) PO Box 6090, KINGSTON ACT 2604
The receipt of the Secretary General for the time being of the Australian Medical Association on behalf of The AMA Indigenous Medical Scholarship Foundation is an absolute discharge to my executor."
By supporting an Indigenous medical student throughout their medical training, you are positively contributing to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
